• 5 Reasons to Add Dry Brushing to Your Selfcare Routine

Have you added dry brushing into your selfcare routine?  This is an ancient cleansing and detoxifying ritual that's been embraced by cultures throughout history.  In fact, Native American tribes were known to use dry corn husks to dry brush as part of their detoxifying and cleansing practices.

What is dry brushing and why is it so important to incorporate into your holistic beauty routine?

Dry brushing is the act of mindfully brushing the surface of the skin with a firm bristled, bone-dry brush.  To dry brush, be sure to pick a cosmetic-grade brush with firm bristles and a good hand-hold, like Purity of Elements Natural Sisal Dry Brush (price recently reduced to $5.99!)..

Start your stokes at your feet and work your way upward in firm, but gentle, strokes towards your heart- this direction is key to promote lymphatic drainage.  Once you reach your hips and lower back, move to your hands, working your way up the arms towards your center.

Avoid sensitive areas like your abdomen and chest.  And never dry brush your face (we have better exfoliation practices for that- hint, try our Daily Detox Exfoliating Cleanser).

What are the benefits of Dry Brushing?  Here are the TOP FIVE Reasons to add this ancient ritual into your skincare routine today!

Encourages Lymphatic Drainage & Detoxification- when we stimulate the skin with a dry brush we are gently stretching and stimulating the lymphatic system that sits below the skin's surface.  By working our way towards our heart, we promote the flow of metabolic waste and help drain the toxins that have accumulated in our body.

Increases Circulation- the gentle strokes against the skin immediately promote better circulation by encourage blood flow towards the surface of the skin (note: you should see a rosey glow, not flush red- in this case, you may be brushing too aggressively).  This acute stimulation of the circulatory system helps promote healthy blood-flow throughout the body.

Decreases the Appearance of Cellulite- while we dry brush we promote circulation which will gently plump the skin helping to diminish the appearance of unsightly cellulite.  It is also believed that dry brushing helps remove the toxins and impurities that are responsible for breaking down connective tissue- which results in cellulite.

Exfoliates Away Dead Surface Cells-  the gentle sloughing away of the skin's outer layer will help remove dead skin cells that dull the skin's appearance.  The right dry brush will also help smooth out those lumps and bumps, like ingrown hairs and dry patches.

Reveal Radiant Skin Instantly- with the increased circulation and the exfoliation, dry brushing has the added benefit of revealing the dewy, youthful skin that's just below the dull, and dry surface layer!

For best results, try dry brushing before a sauna, steam, shower, or bath.  After cleansing, be sure to apply nourishing moisturizer- Like Purity of Elements Restorative Body Lotion- to extend your glow!

  • How to Fall Back in Love with Your Skin This Season!

We've officially shifted from those hot, lazy days of summer to the cool, crisp days of fall!  We happen to love the fall at Purity of Elements- there is something refreshing about the cool autumn nights and the cleansing breeze that hints at the chilly winter ahead!

But what does the season change mean for your skin?  Do you really have to change up your skincare ritual?  The answer, yes and no.

Regardless of the season, there will always be some skincare staples- hint: sunscreen.  But our skin reacts to the changing climate and we can always adjust the way we treat our skin so that it retains that youthful glow we all crave!

So as fall approaches, here are our seasonal skin tips.

Opt for a creamy cleanser- if you are like most of us and you have combination skin, sometimes our initial reaction is to absorb the oil by using a harsh gel-based cleanser. In the summer we may have preferred this as it may have helped remove the layers of sunscreen! But when our skin becomes overly dehydrated, while it may appear less oily at first, it's actually kicking into overdrive and will likely create more oil to compensate for the dryness.  Also, dry, dehydrated skin ages more quickly- make it a point to keep your skin hydrated by using a creamy cleanser like Purity of Elements Daily Detox Exfoliating Cleanser!

Invest in a good Toner- Toners are an important step in any skincare routine.  They help to clarify the skin's surface and help to break up any congestion that cleansers alone won't be able to clear up.  The thin, liquid consistency of a toner also helps penetrate the pores for a deep down clean.  Don't grab the strongest astringent though!  Look for something calming and nourishing so as not to dry out your skin.

Add in a Serum- Serums are essential for repairing your skin and should be added to your skincare ritual.  If you head over to your local skincare store, the serum section can be extremely overwhelming- they have serums that claim to aid in anti-aging, clarifying, hydrating, anti-wrinkling, skin retexturing....and the list goes on.  If you are new to the serum game look for a hydrating serum that has hyaluronic acid.  This is a key ingredient in keeping skin hydrated!  Serums are different than a moisturizer as they work to plump skin by retaining moisture vs. a moisturizer which acts as a barrier on the skin's surface.  Our Radiance Face Serum is backed up by consumer claims with women reporting more radiant skin!

Moisturize- You may have gotten away with just using an SPF this summer, but now that the air is getting a little dryer and you are likely using less sunscreen, you need to reintroduce a daily moisturizer to help protect your skin.  After applying your serum, gently apply a light, creamy moisturizer to help retain skin's healthy glow.  Look for a moisturizer that spreads easily and avoid anything that's too thick!  Our favorite- Purity of Elements Age-Defying Moisturizer

  • Fit Skin at 40!

Yes, it’s true: 40 is the new 30! While this is lovely to hear, it may be harder to see. Skin in its fourth decade undergoes its greatest changes to date…with wrinkles deepening, dark spots getting, well, darker, and skin sagging showing up in more places. While these changes are internal, there’s a lot you can do to counteract them so skin stays as young-looking as you feel.

The three Ds plague skin in its 40s: dryness, dullness, and dark spots. This is an effect of damage accrued in our younger years combined with the natural slowing of skin’s regenerative abilities. The good news is all three can be minimized with a dual-action cleanser like Purity of Elements Daily Detox Exfoliating Cleanser. Part hydrating cream cleanser, part exfoliating skin polisher, it contains our antioxidant Copper 5 Complex™ combined with moisturizing Argan, Avocado, Soybean, and Jojoba Oils for a super-clean, super-fresh finish without intensifying dryness.

Did you know dry skin could trigger issues like sensitivity and premature aging? Moisturizing is essential as we age, especially when a daily exfoliation regimen is in place. Be sure to apply an antioxidant rich, medium-weight moisturizer within 2 minutes of cleansing for the best benefits. And, choose a moisturizer containing nourishing Vitamin E and Soy Protein to flood skin with hydration, minimize the look of fine lines, and boost natural radiance.
